Combating the oak processionary moth along district roads in the Börde district

In 2024, extensive measures were once again taken in the Börde district to combat the oak processionary moth (EPS) along district roads. These pests pose a significant risk to public health, as the caterpillar hairs of the oak processionary moth can cause skin irritation, rashes, itching and respiratory problems on contact.

Measures in spring 2024

In spring 2024, a total of 3,219 oak trees were treated with a biocide on a total of 21 district roads and cycle paths in the northern district of Börde and adjacent to the districts of Salzwedel, Stendal and Jerichower Land, particularly in the vicinity of villages, settlements and leisure facilities such as holiday camps. The treatment was carried out after the trees had developed enough leaves to stop the development of the dangerous caterpillar larvae. This helps to prevent the spread of the pest and the associated health risks for the population.

Mechanical control in late summer

Later in 2024, 558 oak trees were treated with a mechanical intervention. The nests of the caterpillars were vacuumed up and disposed of professionally. This measure ensures that no more poisonous caterpillar hairs can fall from the trees and thus protects citizens from potential health risks.

A look at the past years

In 2021, 2022 and 2023, hundreds of oak trees along the county roads in the Börde district were treated each year. The measures were carried out consistently in spring and late summer to combat the dangerous caterpillars and their larvae in the affected areas.
