The County
With the redistricting that took effect in Sachsen-Anhalt (Saxony-Anhalt) on July 1, 2007, the approximately 2,366-square-kilometer Landkreis Börde was formed, consisting of the complete former districts of Bördekreis and Ohrekreis.
Geographically, this county is located as a link between the low mountain range country and the North German lowlands. The region extends as a transition area from the northern Harzvorland (Harz foothills) in the south to the Altmark in the north. In the west, the county borders on neighboring Niedersachsen (Lower Saxony) for about 48 km as the crow flies, while the east is bounded by the state capital of Magdeburg and by the course of the Elbe River.
The Landkreis Börde, which has its main administrative seat in the district capital Haldensleben, is the administrative center for about 113,000 inhabitants, who are resident in 6 cities 34 municipalities.
