Katrin Baier, the medical director of the rescue service at the Börde district, is not only a member of the preparatory group for Heart Week of 2023, but also chairwoman of the working group of emergency physicians working in Saxony-Anhalt. "Many people treat their heart health carelessly and underestimate the risk of serious illness."
According to the Heart Foundation, cardiovascular diseases are the cause of around 40 percent of all deaths in Germany. The German Heart Report analyzes, the mortality from acute myocardial infarction is highest in the east, here especially in Saxony-Anhalt. "And that's exactly why," says Katrin Baier, "we have also been organizing the Heart Health Week in Saxony-Anhalt for several years."

"Even with a few simple changes to your lifestyle, you can improve your general well-being and cardiovascular health," says Baier. These include adequate physical activity, a balanced diet, not smoking, healthy blood lipid levels, stress balance and relaxation, blood pressure levels in the normal range or responsible alcohol consumption.
Katrin Baier, herself an emergency physician, and her colleagues in the emergency services sometimes see that patients do not recognize the signs of a heart attack and wait too long before calling 911. The first signs of a heart attack are severe pain, a feeling of pressure, a violent burning sensation in the chest, a massive feeling of tightness, sweating anxiety with cold and pale skin, nausea, vomiting, shortness of breath or pain in the upper abdomen. Katrin Baier explains, "Do not hesitate if you discover these signs in yourself or another person. Dial 112 to avoid losing life-saving time. In the case of a heart attack, every second counts - the faster it is recognized and treated, the higher the chances of not suffering serious consequences or dying from it."
With campaigns and events, the state aims to contribute to public awareness with Heart Week, which has been taking place since 2018 in cooperation with various local stakeholders. The goal is to educate people about the risk factors for a heart attack and how to avoid them.
