Opening of the second base of the Börde district road maintenance centre

After Haldensleben, the Office for Road Construction and Maintenance of the Börde district has opened a second base in Oschersleben for the Börde district road maintenance centre. The base is located at the depot of Kommunalservice Landkreis Börde.

The background to this is the end of the contract for winter road maintenance and other maintenance measures (mowing, etc.) by an external company. Vehicles for road maintenance and winter road maintenance will be used at the site and a new salt silo will be put into operation. The funds for this come from the budget planning for 2023. From now on, the district will maintain all district roads in the southern part of the Börde district itself.

District Administrator Martin Stichnoth also attended the commissioning ceremony, where he was able to see the base for himself and ceremoniously put the salt silo into operation.

The compulsory task of the Börde district as a road construction authority includes all tasks associated with construction and maintenance. Classifiable services resulting from the maintenance of the road network are the operation of roads and bridges (operational maintenance). This refers to services that are necessary to ensure the safe use of the road: Winter road maintenance, cleaning, mowing, waste disposal, pruning (clearance gauge). Furthermore, the maintenance, repair and renewal of roads and bridges (structural maintenance) is necessary. This includes services to maintain the condition and substance of the road (minor repairs to traffic areas = maintenance; application of new surface treatments and surface layers = repairs and renewals).

With a length of 595 kilometres, the Börde district has the largest district road network of all districts in Saxony-Anhalt, which is divided into 414 road sections. The individual road sections differ in terms of open stretches and through roads. In this respect, the number of sections of open stretches and through roads varies along the individual district roads. District roads are feeder roads that represent the so-called indispensable connection to the superordinate network and are links between towns and districts. The structure of the road network is fragmented and not continuous, as is the case with federal and state roads. There are a total of 111 district roads in the Börde district (including 11 district roads with A sections and 1 B section). The longest district road is the K 1106 from Wedringen to the district border (Altmarkkreis Salzwedel) at 24.8 km. The shortest district road is the K 1317 with a length of 90 metres.

484 of the total of 595 kilometres of district roads run outside built-up areas. The 111 kilometres of inner-city district roads are divided into a total of 131 different local roads. There are an estimated 80,000 street trees and around 24,000 delineators. 52 kilometres of open road and 20 kilometres in local thoroughfares form roadside cycle paths along the district roads. Of the 595 kilometres of existing district roads, 435 kilometres were upgraded after 1994. Currently, 174 kilometres of district roads still need to be upgraded. 165 km of district roads are valued at €1, including 10 km of local roads.

Between 1994 and 2024, the district of Börde (or rather the former own company for road construction and maintenance) invested a total of €175 million in the expansion of district roads, of which €158 million was invested in district roads and €17 million in bridge construction.

In addition to investments in road construction and bridge structures, around €2.6 million has been spent on road maintenance each year to date. In 2023, a total of 90,939 m² of surface treatments and surface renewal were carried out over a length of approx. 0.650 kilometres. Surface renewals in particular will become increasingly important in the coming years, as many carriageway surfaces built in the 1990s are reaching the limits of wear and tear. Pavement rehabilitation measures are necessary in order to prevent deeper destruction of base layers and thus the need for premature fundamental renewal by renewing worn asphalt surface layers. Maintenance costs are closely linked to the construction of new roads and bridges. The investment backlog on roads plays a decisive role here
