Börde breaks new ground: First cycle-only road created - inter-municipal showcase project connects districts

Together with the Salzland district and the municipalities of Sülzetal, Bördeaue and Egelner Mulde, the district of Börde is planning a pioneering infrastructure project: the K 1261 district road between Altenweddingen and Unseburg is being converted into a cycle-only road - a first for the region.

"We are breaking new ground with this project," explains District Administrator Martin Stichnoth. "For the first time, a district road in our district is being rededicated as a cycle-only road - a flagship project that emphasises the importance of cycling and at the same time makes an important contribution to sustainable mobility."

The Börde district is breaking new ground here, as this is the first time a district road has been converted into a cycle-only road. "This will sustainably improve the connection to the High Technology Park that is to be built on the land of our municipalities in the Börde district. And we are putting the positive effects of cycling centre stage," emphasises District Administrator Stichnoth.

The new cycle route on the former K 1261 district road will create a direct link between the municipalities of Sülzetal, Bördeaue and Egelner Mulde. The width of the cycle road will be four metres in asphalt construction in accordance with standards. A 50-centimetre verge on both sides and passing bays will ensure safety. "This means that the cycle path can continue to be used by neighbouring farmers," explains the district administrator.

The route between Altenweddingen and Unseburg is almost six kilometres long, three kilometres of which are in the Börde district. The planning and expansion of the route is being organised in cooperation with the Salzland district. The current district road is paved and is currently used by fewer than 500 vehicles a day. The K1224 and K1226 run parallel to the K1261, which means that motorists do not have to travel significantly longer distances.

The Börde district council has already decided to convert the K1261 district road into a cycle route as part of an investment measure with the help of funding. An amount of 89,000 euros has already been budgeted for planning services in the 2025 supplementary budget of the Börde district. The funding applied for from the European Union and the state of Saxony-Anhalt is intended to cover up to 90 per cent of the estimated project costs of around three million euros. The Sülzetal unified municipality will assume the municipal construction and maintenance burden of the cycle route after the conversion.

The district administrator and his counterpart Markus Bauer from the Salzland district as well as Mayor Jörg Methner signed the necessary agreements for the cooperation on 24 April 2025 at 2:30 pm at the district border between Altenweddingen and Unseburg.
