The state of Saxony-Anhalt will continue to support local authorities in combating the oak processionary moth in 2023. The State Office for Consumer Protection is providing funding for this as part of a support program. As in previous years, the Börde district has also implemented measures to combat the oak processionary moth in 2022 and thus measures to combat / reduce the dangers of contact with the poisonous hairs of the moth's caterpillars (reactions such as severe rashes, itching, inflammatory skin reactions, eye irritation, fever and dizziness). This includes local spraying of the nests in the infested trees in spring and mechanical control (collecting) of the nests in late summer / fall of a calendar year. The responsible employees in the Department of Road Construction and Maintenance determine the locations of the infested trees each year in order to determine the overall scope of services and thus plan the necessary measures. After the tender and awarding of the service to a suitable specialist company, on-site instruction is provided and the implementation of the commissioned services is monitored. In 2023, chemical control against the oak processionary moth was carried out in spring on 3769 oak trees along the district roads in order to interrupt or prevent the development of the larvae and thus the danger to humans posed by their hairs. The second stage of mechanical control will be carried out this fall on around 820 oak trees. The nests in the trees will be vacuumed and disposed of professionally. In accordance with the focus of the funding program, a significant contribution was made here with state funds to protect the health of the population against the dangers posed by the oak processionary moth. Through the state grant, the district receives financial support from the State Office for Consumer Protection for the sustainable control of the oak processionary moth. Among other things, this also promotes coordination of the necessary measures with the local authorities and municipalities.
