Residence of EU citizens (Union citizens)

General

  • Union citizens do not require a visa to enter the country.
  • Union citizens do not require a residence permit for their stay.
  • In the first three months after entry, Union citizens have an unrestricted right of residence (after that, so-called freedom of movement requirement is necessary).

Prerequisite for freedom of movement § 2 para. 2 Freedom of Movement Act / EU

  • No. 1 Union citizens who wish to reside as employees or for the purpose of vocational training
  • No. 1 a Union citizens who want to stay to look for work, for up to 6 months and beyond, as long as they can prove that they are still looking for work and have a reasonable prospect of being employed
  • No. 2 Union citizens, if they are entitled to pursue a self-employed gainful activity

are entitled to do so

  • No. 3 Union citizens who, without establishing themselves, wish to provide services as self-employed persons within the meaning of Art. 57 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the EU, if they are entitled to provide the service
  • Union citizens, as recipients of services,
  • Union citizens who are not gainfully employed, subject to the requirements of § 4
  • Family members under the conditions of §§ 3 and 4
  • Union citizens and their family members who have acquired a permanent right of residence.

After 3 months of residence, the following documents must be presented to the Aliens' Registration Office

  • valid passport or identity card
  • Proofs of livelihood

(employment contract or business registration)

  • Proof of existing health insurance coverage
