The Landkreis Börde was created on July 1, 2007. The state parliament of Saxony-Anhalt had decided by law that the old districts Bördekreis and Ohrekreis would merge. The name patron for the today's administrative district Börde is the very fertile Magdeburger Börde situated between "Colbitz-Letzlinger Heide" and "Harzvorland". That is why we also describe our district in the district development concept with the motto "Best soil for a fertile future". The Landkreis Börde has established itself as a business location in the course of the structural change from an agricultural to an industrial culture.
The Prussian province of Saxony, formed in 1816, received a new district division after the War of Liberation and the return of territory to Prussia. The former districts of Neuhaldensleben, Wolmirstedt, Oschersleben and Wanzleben as well as part of the district of Gardelegen essentially coincided with today's Börde district.
After the end of World War II, the territory of today's Börde County belonged to the Soviet occupation zone. With the founding of the GDR in 1949, the districts of Magdeburg and Halle were established instead of the province or state of Saxony-Anhalt. In 1950/52, the district boundaries were redefined. As a result, the districts of Haldensleben, Wolmirstedt, Oschersleben and Wanzleben were created approximately as they existed until 1994.
German unification in 1990 led to the re-establishment of the state of Saxony-Anhalt and to a first territorial reform in 1994, when the Ohrekreis district was formed from the Haldensleben and Wolmirstedt districts plus some municipalities from the Stendal and Klötze districts. The rural district Bördekreis was formed from the districts Oschersleben and Wanzleben as well as one village from the district Staßfurt. Haldensleben and Oschersleben were designated as district towns.
In the course of the second territorial reform in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, the former administrative districts of Ohrekreis and Bördekreis were merged on 01.07.2007 to form the new administrative district of Börde.
The Landkreis Börde has established itself as a sustainable business location. Companies find a solid basis for their entrepreneurial activities here. The towns and municipalities have developed commercial and industrial areas that are already well utilized. Many small and medium-sized craft, service, trade and industrial businesses are employers for the people of the region.
The A2 and A14 highways, the Mittelland Canal, a well-developed rail network and the proximity to the airports of Berlin, Hanover and Leipzig form a versatile infrastructure. The short distances to the technology centers of Braunschweig and Magdeburg, with scientific institutions and interfaces to the major automobile manufacturers, reflect on the business location.
Economic sectors with supra-regional significance are found throughout the district. Content elements in the Landkreis Börde include not only the soil, which is among the best in Germany and makes the food industry the highest-turnover industry in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, but its natural deposits also favor the glass, ceramics and building materials industries.
The social infrastructure with valuable educational opportunities, modern sports and leisure facilities and diverse culture with history and charming natural experiences also plays a significant role.
The Landkreis Börde impresses with its leisure and recreational opportunities, churches and monasteries worth seeing, castles and palaces, museums and historical monuments. Geographically, this district is located as a link between the low mountain range country and the North German lowlands. The district derives its special charm from the diversity of its landscapes. From the fertile Börde in the south, the largest contiguous black earth area in Germany, the Börde district extends to the north to the meadow and swamp landscape of Drömling. Forested mountain ranges and the Colbitz-Letzlinger Heide with the largest closed linden forest in Europe characterize the center of the district.
The sights of the district document the eventful history of this area. In front of the Haldensleben town hall, a Roland statue unique in its kind can be seen. In order to preserve the recent industrial history, an old brickyard in Hundisburg is maintained by the district as a producing technical monument. The baroque castle in Hundisburg is one of the most important buildings in Saxony-Anhalt. Recreation seekers have a variety of offers in the only climatic health resort of the district in Flechtingen.
