The columned basilica is one of the noblest structures of the Romanesque style. It was begun in 1111 with the staggered choir and finished 20 years later with the three-nave nave in the Hirsau architectural style. The capitals of the twelve monolithic columns are among the best that High Romanesque architectural sculpture has produced. The interior and exterior of the church are adorned with two symbolic portals as well as round arch, checkerboard, interlace and palmette friezes. One of the oldest altar chapels in Germany with Romanesque and Gothic elements is another highlight of the interior.
